About optical illusions

Optical illusions occur when our eyes and brain process visual information in ways that don’t match reality.

This happens because our brain constantly interprets shapes, colors, and backgrounds, sometimes leading to surprising results. Optical illusions remind us that “seeing” isn’t always believing.

Optical illusion on shade taking

Optical illusions during shade taking occur because the shade of natural teeth is influenced by the gingival color and the dark background in the oral cavity.

In general, natural teeth with a gingival background (reddish color) appear yellowish green compared to teeth without a gingival background (hue).
In addition, the shade guide appears brighter (value) in an intraoral environment where the background is dark.

  • This causes an error from the original shade of the target tooth.
  • We tend to judge target teeth as yellowish green and darker than their original shade.

The shade of the restoration made based on the incorrect information will not match the target tooth.

The use of Gumy during intraoral shade taking allows for more accurate shade taking by providing the same background conditions for the natural teeth and the shade guide.
